The Spanish national flag was officially acknowledged on the 19th of December, 1981 and always carries the Spanish emblem in the yellow stripe mid-level encircled by two red stripes. Without the emblem it is only a simplified version of the civil and merchant flag accepted since 1936.
Its roots date back to the 15th century but the development was only finished in 1981. As well as many other flags up to that date it underwent several changes particularly under the fascist general Franco. In about 40 years from 1936 until 1981, the emblem was changed multiple times.
For 30 years now the Spanish flag was left unchanged. An exception is expression of sorrow. In this case a black ribbon is tacked on the Spanish national flag.
