The Jamaican flag was officially introduced on the 6th of August 1962.
It consists of a yellow St Andrews Cross and four triangular areas in black and green. The green colour is symbolic for the hope and agriculture in Jamaica, the yellow or gold for the island's rich natural resources and beauty of sunlight. In contrast, the black areas are supposed to remind of difficult times and the current poverty of the Jamaican population.
For 90 years, during Jamaican times as a British Colony, different versions of the blue Ensign and the Union Jack, Great Britain's flag, served as the Jamaican flag.
