The Ghanaian flag is a tricolour consisting of red, yellow and green. In the centre is a black five-pointed star which is regarded as the guiding star of the African independence.
In its colours the flag is based on the idea of Pan-Africanism, which wants to attain the unity of all African people worldwide, regardless of their ethnicity or nationality. While the red colour is a reminder for all the bloodshed in the Ghanaian struggle for freedom, the golden colour symbolizes the wealth of the country.
The British colonial rulers named Ghana “Gold Coast” yet. The green colour represents the fields and forests of the country. The flag was for the first time officially adopted in the course of the Ghanaian independence on the 6th of March, 1957. Beforehand the country was a British as well as a German colony.
