Estonia's flag is a horizontal tricolour that was officially adopted on the 7th of August in 1990. It was introduced on the 21st of November in 1918 for the first time in its colours blue, black and white.
The Estonian flag has its origins in the time around 1880, when it was repeatedly hoisted in a students' fraternity and became the symbol of of Estonian nationalism during the first Estonian independence in 1918. For this reason it was banned by the occupying force during the invasion of the Soviet Union and the loss of independence.
With the end of the Cold War in 1989, Estonia was able to regain its sovereignty and thus to readopt its flag.
