The Columbian flag was originally designed in Venezuela but adopted firstly by Columbia on the 26th November, 1861.
The colours yellow, blue and red date back to the struggle for freedom against the Spanish colonial rulers. They are labelled Great-Columbian colours because they are also representative on the Ecuadorian flag and the flag of Venezuela. Within the interpretation of the colours there are three well known theories. In the first one the yellow colour symbolises sovereignty and justice, the blue colour symbolises aristocracy, loyalty and alertness. Red symbolises the bloodshed in the struggles for freedom as well as the bravery and honour of the Columbian population. The second interpretation declares yellow to signify absolute freedom, blue as a symbol for the equality of all people before God and red as a symbol for brotherhood of man. The third well known interoperation implies that yellow symbolises the natural resources of the country, blue the water of the Pacific and red the bloodshed in all struggles for freedom.
