Bulgaria's flag is a horizontal tricolour in white, green and red.
After being sewn around 1861, it was officially adopted on the 16th of April 1879, in order to be hoisted in the Russian-Turkish War. The Bulgarian flag kept this form until 1944.
With the occupation of Bulgaria by the Red Army, the national coat of arms was added to the upper corner. It persisted in different variations until the end of the Cold War. On the 27th of November 1990, the original Bulgarian flag, as it is still being hoisted today, was readopted.
The white colour stands for peace and liberty, the green for fertility and nature in the country, whereas the red symbolises the blood that was shed in Bulgaria's freedom struggles.
