The flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina was officially adopted on the 4th of February 1998. The flag is an outcome of the Westendorp-Commission - named after the country’s president at that time - which was deployed to redesign the flag.
The flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina shows a right-angled, golden triangle on a blue background. Its form shall illustrate the outlines of the country as well as the three ethnic groups living there: Bosnians, Serbs and Croats. Simultaneously the golden colour of the flag symbolises the sun and the peace, which was aimed for by the separation of Yugoslavia. The hypotenuse shows a symbolic never-ending chain of white five-pointed stars. In combination with the blue background this is based on the design of the flag of the European Union because the European Union played a main role in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s struggle for independence.
When the European Union accepted Bosnia and Herzegovina as a sovereign state on the 17th of April, 1992, this was a distinct sign and the EU therefore supported the young country.
